The Process

A Gentle, Unhurried Goodbye —
From First Call to Final Goodnight.

01

Call Us Anytime

Our Care Specialists come on duty at 6 am, 7 days a week. Call early in the day for the best chance at a same-day appointment.

02

We Come to You

A highly experienced, licensed veterinarian arrives at your home — no carriers, no waiting rooms, no scary sights and sounds.

03

A Peaceful Farewell

Your veterinarian answers questions, then administers a gentle sedative so your pet is fully relaxed before the final, peaceful injection.

04

Aftercare With Dignity

Cremation assistance can be included. We transport your pet to our eco-friendly aquamation center. Individual or communal cremation can be arranged for you.

The Difference

There's No Place
Like Home.

For our beloved pets, the veterinary clinic can be a stressful place — unfamiliar smells, bright lights, and the memory of past visits. When the time comes to say goodbye, your pet deserves to be where they feel safest: at home, on their favorite blanket, with the people who love them most.

  • No scary places, smells, or sounds
  • Family and other pets can be present
  • Gentle sedation before the final step
  • Individual or communal cremation can be arranged for you

I recently used Compassionate Care for my 17.5yr old dog. I had never been through the experience before and was devastated. From the initial contact to the very end, every single person I interacted with poured us with love and compassion. The vet who came to our home was so patient and kind. She made us feel comfortable and at ease. I cannot say enough about this amazing business.

Knowing Monkey-kitty was being so lovingly taken care of after I dropped her off at Compassionate Care was such a gift during a horrible time. The admin staff are the absolute sweetest and made the whole process as easy as possible. Can't recommend enough.

Thank you Stacey C. for your kindness in such a terrible time. You were graceful and kind, I was a mess and you were not fazed. This is a job only a special person can do, and you are definitely special.

Common Questions

Everything You Might Be Wondering.

How do I know if my pet is in pain?+

Indications of pain can range from subtle to obvious. Signs may include changes in appetite, mobility, and grooming. Lack of interest in activities or vocalizing may also indicate pain. Increased heart rate, respiratory rate, and/or panting can also be observed. It is important to consult your veterinarian if you believe your pet may be experiencing pain or discomfort.

How do I know if the time is right for saying goodbye?+

Making the decision to say goodbye to a pet is incredibly challenging and often accompanied by feelings of guilt. Consulting with your regular veterinarian is a good first step. Pet owners often develop an intuitive sense of when it's the right time. Two conditions that require immediate attention are when the pet refuses to drink water or experiences difficulty breathing — especially open-mouthed breathing or heavy panting.

What makes Compassionate Care special?+

What sets us apart is the exceptional level of care we provide and our extensive experience in assisting families with end-of-life decisions for their beloved pets. Our team of highly experienced veterinarians understands the emotional challenges involved and is dedicated to offering support and compassion throughout the process.

How far ahead should I schedule an appointment?+

In most cases, we can accommodate same-day appointments. The earlier you call in the day, the more helpful — our Care Specialist staff come on duty at 6 am. Calling 1–2 days in advance is helpful if you have a preferred timeframe, live 45+ minutes outside Portland, or would like cremation assistance for a large pet.

How much does pet euthanasia cost?+

Because there are several factors that impact our service cost, it is not possible to give a one-size-fits-all answer. Please call our office at (503) 880-1172 or contact us through our website, and we can provide a personalized answer to your questions.
